Toggle5 Simple Hair Care Habits Every Indian Should Follow Daily
By Dr. Pratham Rathore | Healthy Essence Lab, Pune
Hair fall is one of the most common problems I see in my clinic every single day. Men, women, young students, working professionals — almost everyone is worried about their hair. And the surprising truth is — most hair problems are not caused by bad genes or bad luck. They are caused by bad daily habits.
Let me share 5 simple habits that will make a real difference to your hair health.
1. Do Not Wash Your Hair Every Day
Many people think daily washing keeps hair clean and healthy. But washing every day removes the natural oils from your scalp that protect your hair. Wash your hair 2 to 3 times a week maximum. Use a mild, sulphate-free shampoo that suits your scalp type.
2. Oil Your Hair — But the Right Way
Oiling is a very old Indian tradition and it genuinely works. But leaving oil on for 2 to 3 days is actually harmful — it blocks your scalp pores and causes dandruff. Apply oil 1 to 2 hours before washing and then rinse it off properly. That is enough.
3. Eat Protein — Your Hair is Made of It
Hair is made of a protein called keratin. If your diet is low in protein, your hair will become weak and start falling. Include eggs, dal, paneer, nuts, and sprouts in your daily meals. No shampoo in the world can fix a poor diet.
4. Avoid Tight Hairstyles and Excessive Heat
Tight ponytails, rubber bands, and daily straightening or curling damage your hair shaft over time. This leads to breakage and thinning near the hairline. Let your hair breathe — air dry whenever possible and avoid tight pulling styles daily.
5. Manage Your Stress — It Directly Causes Hair Fall
This is the most underrated cause of hair loss in India today. High stress increases a hormone called cortisol in your body which directly pushes hair follicles into a resting phase — causing noticeable shedding within 2 to 3 months. Exercise, proper sleep, and even 10 minutes of meditation daily can genuinely reduce stress-related hair fall.
Hair loss that has been happening for more than 3 months needs medical attention — not just a new shampoo. Early treatment always gives better results. Do not wait until the problem becomes severe.
